TWO LEGENDS. ONE PAPER.

Press release; Hahnemühle.

Hahnemühle and HARMAN PHOTO to release new range of fine art photographic inkjet papers at PMA 2010

Two of the most iconic brands in digital photo printing, HARMAN technology and Hahnemühle FineArt are joining forces to create a best-in-class range of fine art inkjet media, due to be unveiled for the first time at the PMA exhibition in late February.

The ‘HARMAN Professional Inkjet by Hahnemühle’ range will consist of six fine art papers plus a canvas, providing a range of gloss and matt finishes, various textures and tones. Two of the new papers are real fiber-based Baryta papers, providing unrivalled archival properties and a look and feel that emulates traditional Baryta darkroom papers.

Norbert Klinke, Hahnemühle’s Sales and Marketing Director commented: “With HARMAN we have found a perfect partner with which to engineer a new class of inkjet media. Their knowledge of image-making, derived from the production of ILFORD PHOTO black and white photography papers for over a century, provides a fantastic foundation alongside our own heritage and expertise to develop a truly remarkable paper.”

HARMAN technology is the company behind the iconic range of ILFORD PHOTO black and white photographic products. HARMAN’s unparalleled coating expertise and technology is complemented by Hahnemühle’s heritage in developing a broad range of textured fine art papers for the digital photography market.

Steven Brierley, Marketing Director at HARMAN technology commented: “This new range of inkjet media not only represents a new stage in the evolution of photographic inkjet printing, but a fantastic blend of two unique photographic heritages.”

The papers are designed to meet the needs of the professional fine art photography market, but there is also expected to be significant demand from the enthusiast photography community.

The first glimpse of the new HARMAN Professional Inkjet by Hahnemühle papers will be on February 21 at the PMA exhibition at the Anaheim Convention Centre, Southern California. The range is then expected to hit shelves around the world in April.

Hahnemühle’s Photo Rag® Baryta wins the Photo Industry ‘Oscar’

Press Release - Hahnemühle
The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has announced that Hahnemühle’s Photo Rag® Baryta, the first digital Baryta paper made of cotton fibres, is the best Fine Art inkjet paper worldwide. For the third time, a Hahnemühle Digital FineArt collection paper has won the TIPA award for the best photo and imaging product of the year.

“We are truly proud of having once again been awarded a TIPA trophy,” says Jörg Adomat, Hahnemühle’s Managing Director. “This is an important award for our Photo Rag® Baryta which combines the advantages of a pure cotton paper with the unequalled look of traditional baryta papers from analogue darkroom laboratories.” The coating of the finely structured high-gloss paper contains barium sulphate, making for a stunning image. No optical brighteners are used for the production of the paper but it features a pleasant white and a perfect balance between brilliance and reflection, nevertheless. Due to these characteristics, the paper represents the No 1 choice for prestigious gallery prints, with black-and-white photography enthusiasts in particular appreciating the high Dmax value and the reproduction of the finest shade of grey nuances. At the same time, Photo Rag® Baryta also is perfectly suitable for luminous colour pictures. With its weight of 315 gsm it is satisfyingly slip proof and impressive to handle. Like every Hahnemühle paper, Photo Rag® Baryta also features ultimate ageing resistance and archival quality, suitable for every Fine Art inkjet printer.

ILFORD introduces new GALERIE roll products at Photokina 2008

23-28 September, Cologne, Germany
Stand number: B010, Hall: 10.1

New ‘optically controlled’ nano layer, re-designed base and full compatibility with the latest inkjet printers

Marly, Switzerland, 18 September, 2008 – ILFORD announces a step change in coating technology with the launch of the new GALERIE Smooth Pearl and Smooth Gloss roll products at this year’s Photokina in Cologne, Germany.

Engineered to meet the needs of the most demanding professional photographers and the latest wide format printers, both media finishes incorporate a number of evolutions in digital imaging technology:

• New ‘Optically controlled’, nano technology coating allows stunning images to be printed from the latest pigment inks - ILFORD scientists have fully explored the imaging possibilities of nano particles and re-optimised the coated layer to get the best possible results from wide-format, aqueous inkjet printers. The new layer is more transparent which reduces light scatter to give cleaner highlights, deeper shadows, more open mid-tones and improved sharpness.

• New base that provides the optimum balance of weight, flexibility and opacity - The new base features more compacted fibres that give a greater opacity and flexibility for the same overall paper weight of 290gsm. This new base will transport easily through all current inkjet printers’ capabilities whilst retaining the feel of a true photographic paper. The base also has a cleaner, more natural white tint, presenting a superb canvas for the image.

• Full printer compatibility - The new media has a colour gamut that will fully exploit the benefits of the latest wide-format, aqueous inkjet printers such as Canon, HP and Epson, which feature additional colour inksets. The user will see more vibrant prints with a real richness of colour as well as a subtle separation of mid-tones. This media is, therefore, fully capable of exploiting the performance of such printers while remaining compatible with future technological developments.

• As with all GALERIE media, the new Smooth Gloss and Pearl products will have optimised ICC profiles available from www.ilford.com
“The ILFORD R&D team has spent a long time enhancing elements of the GALERIE range and professional photographers will be delighted with the results,” said Andrew Stewart, Sales and Marketing Director, ILFORD Imaging Switzerland GmbH. He continued: “Not only does the media have a more natural white base which really brings a picture to life, it also makes full use of the latest inkjet printers’ capabilities enabling photographers to produce richer, sharper images. ILFORD is delighted to announce the European launch of these two new products at this year’s Photokina,” he concluded.
The new GALERIE Smooth Gloss and GALERIE Pearl roll products will be demonstrated with the very latest inkjet printers on the ILFORD stand number B010, hall 10.1. The ILFORD team will also be on hand to show you how you can achieve exceptional quality results whatever your printing preferences and regardless of your input source. To arrange an interview or to request a product demonstration, please contact the press department below.
Product availability:
Both media will be available as 17”, 24”, 44” rolls plus 60” pearl rolls in the UK later this year through JP Distribution.

Professionals, Prints and Photo Rag® at Photokina 2008

Hahnemuehle FineArt stand at Photokina 2008

With fantastic images on show and a chance to meet artists and printing experts, the Hahnemuehle FineArt stand at Photokina 2008 is well worth a visit. Located on stand (C020) in hall 10.1, visitors will be rewarded with far more than just the full product range of the rich in tradition manufacturer. Top-class images by renowned photographers are exhibited in a gallery and those interested will even have the chance of meeting the artists and conversing with them. Meanwhile, experts will use the latest printers from the top manufacturers to demonstrate what can be accomplished technically and how to achieve optimum printing results. In addition, Photokina will also be the venue for the public launch of two newly developed Photo Rag® papers. Visitors can vote their favourites from the Digital FineArt Collection, with every participant in the poll being provided with a sample pack containing new papers in A4 format.

“We want to offer the Photokina visitors the opportunity to communicate with artists and experts,” says Managing Director Jörg Adomat. “The Digital FineArt Collection papers are far more than just pure picture carriers. With their individual surfaces and unique haptics, the papers and the respective image blend into a new piece of art.”

On every day of the fair, visitors will have the chance of talking shop with renowned German and international photographers at the coffee bar – or while printing. The expected guests: Andreas H. Bitesnich, Andrzej Dragan, Gaby Gerster, Michael Gilbert, Manfred Kriegelstein and Günter Pfannmüller. Works of the aforementioned artists will be displayed in a gallery at the Hahnemühle stand.

New: Photo Rag® Ultra Smooth and Photo Rag® Baryta

At Hahnemühle, Photo Rag® indicates our much loved 100-percent cotton papers. The new Photo Rag® Ultra Smooth features a particularly smooth surface with a premium silk-finish coating. It’s suitable for both black-and-white and colour prints. The finest colour nuances and contrasts are very distinguishable even in the darkest print areas. With a weight of 305 gsm, the paper has got an appealingly smooth yet substantial feel to it.

Photo Rag® Baryta combines the advantages of pure cotton paper with the unequalled appearance of a traditional darkroom baryta paper. The coating of this glossy, finely structured paper contains barium sulphate, making for a stunning and unique image. “White but restrained at the same time, glossy but not artificial, with a perfect balance between brilliance and reflection. With these attributes, the paper represents the first choice for prestigious gallery prints,” says Neil Snape, fashion photographer from Paris. This paper will be appreciated by black-and-white-photography enthusiasts in particular, but it is also very suitable for luminous colour pictures. The grammage amounts to 315 gsm.

Both new qualities are acid-free and thanks to their ultimate archival qualities, they are ideal for creating beautiful images with the high standards of museum-quality prints.

An extraordinary print result in next to no time

Using the latest Canon, Epson and HP printers, the Hahnemühle experts will demonstrate FineArt inkjet printing. “Usually, just a few adjustments are necessary for achieving optimum print results,” reveals Hahnemühle Support Stefan Neumann. Nonetheless, he adds, the user should possess some knowledge regarding the interplay of the components - image processing, printer and paper. “There’s nothing that can replace hands-on experience. Therefore, we are going to reproduce the complete printing process using the devices of several manufacturers, on our stand.”

Once again, every Photokina visitor can vote for their favourite among the latest Digital FineArt Collection papers, this year. A challenge met not only by the aforementioned Photo Rag® papers alone but also by the qualities FineArt Baryta, Bamboo, Daguerre Canvas and Monet Canvas. Every participant in the poll will be provided with a sample pack containing six A4 format papers, offering them the chance to test for themselves and experience the individual vibrancy of the different media with their own images.
